Our Story

HebMade was established as a community support response to the sudden onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020.

We offer an online sales platform for the wealth of skilled Hebridean artists and makers who have historically sold offline through the islands’ shops and galleries.

About HebMade:

HebMade is based on the Isle of Harris. We envision this as a boutique gallery showcasing the very best of the art and craft of the Hebridean islands.

Hebmade is run on a voluntary basis for the benefit of those island artists and makers who have lost routes to market due to the coronavirus crisis. Many of our island artists ordinarily sell their pieces in person, or through other physical retailers, and website commerce sites can be costly and time consuming. By establishing an online gallery/retailer of sorts for the island, we are able to work collectively to sell the islands and promote the art inspired by our unique home.

I own and run a stone jewellery and homewares business, Gneiss Things, with my partner - hand carving work from the local rock - and realised I could help others with continuing their small businesses despite the devastating effect the Covid-19 pandemic as had on our island economy.

Having seen the value of having an online presence for my own business, the aim of HebMade is to open up the creative talent in the Hebrides to those further afield.

Having run Hebmade voluntarily for free for one year due to the Covid crisis, we now take less than 10% commission, to assist with web running costs. Artists receive 90% of the income from their work, with the remainder as online merchant fees (Stripe). No profit is made by HebMade.
